As planned in the Workstream 1, the five partner schools taking part in the programme "Anti-bullying Strategies in schools" carried out preliminary interviews. By following the guide provided by NCfLB, interviews with school staff, students and parents were held in order to collect local experiences of bullying and its negative effects on students and other members of the school community.

The Comprehensive schools involved are :"Luigi Perna" in Avellino, "Don Milani-Dorso" in San Giorgio a Cremano, "Principe di Piemonte" in Santa Maria Capua Vetere, "Leonardo Da Vinci" in Villa Literno e "Sac. R. Calderisi" in Villa di Briano. The recent survey results can be summed up as follows: all the schools agree that bullying is a very serious issue that affects mainly adolescents and occurs in school, causing serious impact to the development of personality. School violence is the result of actions and acts by some students aimed at causing pain, fear and distress to their classmates. It appears especially as physical violence and verbal abuse and can be direct, if the violent act is aimed directly at the victim, and indirect, if it consists of a form of social discrimination and intentional exclusion from the group. It differs according to student's gender and age, often involving women rather than men, and occuring both inside and outside school, when and where students are less controlled by teachers, for examples during recreation time, at the school exit and in bathrooms. According to heads and teachers there is a serious need for school policies and school staff’s training with regard to the phenomenon of bullying. It is necessary to help schools establish effective bullying prevention and intervention programs, which not only consider the European and the world's best practices but also take into consideration the cultural and socio-economic background of the country. Children's behavior is very important in order to help them become citizens within a community based on respect of rules and integration among its members. Parents and teachers agree that the best way to solve the problem should be the implementation of prevention strategies and the development of a positive learning behaviour among children. Schools and families are the first context for social relationships and they should promote such important values as self-confidence, openness to dialogue, respect for the rules that guarantee an atmosphere of convivencia. The students' point of view is the most important to be analyzed as they are the real "experts" in bullying events, because they are involved as victims, bullies or simply spectators. They suggest organizing meetings to increase communication among students, parents and teachers. The school board should include representatives of students to discuss periodically problems related to bullying and other forms of violence. The preliminary interviews have been a very effective instrument to draw attention to the students' needs and problems and to highlight the point of view of every member of the school community to identify.
